Weather and Wedding Flowers

How Weather Can Impact Your Wedding Flowers and What We Do About It

When you think about your wedding flowers, you're probably envisioning dreamy bouquets, lush centerpieces, and a stunning floral arch—not a thunderstorm or heat wave. But as florists, we know that weather can play a major role in how your flowers look and hold up on your big day.

Whether your celebration is outdoors in peak summer, nestled in fall foliage, or planned during an unpredictable spring weekend, weather conditions like heat, rain, wind, or cold can all have an impact. The good news? We’ve seen it all and we’re always prepared.

Here’s how different types of weather can affect your wedding flowers, and what we do to make sure your blooms are beautiful no matter what.

Heat & Direct Sunlight

Hot weather can cause flowers to wilt, fade, or droop quickly—especially delicate varieties like hydrangeas, feverfew, sweet peas, and dahlias. Prolonged sun exposure can also dry out stems and make petals crispy.

What we do to protect your flowers in heat:

  • Keep flowers cool and hydrated up until the moment they’re placed.

  • Design on-site when possible to minimize time in the heat.

  • Use hidden water sources (like floral foam or tubes) to keep arrangements fresh.

  • Recommend heat-resistant blooms like lisianthus, zinnias, or roses when temperatures are high.

Rain & Humidity

Rain is said to bring good luck on your wedding day but it can also bring challenges for your flowers and other elements of the big day. Humidity can cause petals to feel soft or limp, and certain dyed or dried flowers may become discolored and stain.

Our rainy day floral prep includes:

  • Monitoring the forecast and adjusting our delivery and setup timeline as needed.

  • Waterproof wrappings and flower-safe transportation methods.

  • Avoiding moisture-sensitive materials and bringing along extra supplies for touch-ups.

  • Being flexible with switching the space around if needed.

Cold Weather & Frost

In colder temperatures, flowers can freeze, turn brown, or become soft and unusable especially if left outside for too long. Tropical flowers are particularly sensitive to the cold.

To keep flowers safe in chilly conditions, we:

  • Insulate and protect arrangements during transport.

  • Keep bouquets indoors until it’s time to walk down the aisle.

  • Choose cold-tolerant blooms like amaryllis, tulips, ranunculus, and hellebores.

  • Educate couples on flower care during colder months to avoid any surprises.

Wind

Strong winds can knock over arrangements, tangle ribbon-wrapped bouquets, and wreak havoc on floral installations like arches or aisle markers.

To prevent floral disasters in windy conditions, we:

  • Secure everything with weights, wire, and heavy-duty floral mechanics if needed.

  • Avoid top-heavy or extra delicate designs for outdoor ceremonies.

  • Always have backup materials on hand for last-minute fixes.

  • Strategically position arrangements where they’re less exposed to gusts.
