Our Favorite Funky Flowers

Funky Flowers

At Bell’s Flowers, we always love the soft romantic look but sometimes it's fun to mix things up a bit! We love bringing in a mix of blooms you don’t see every day, no matter the season.

Honestly, we love the reaction of "oh my gosh, what is that? I love it!"  A lot of our favorite flowers are the ones that make people stop, stare, and sometimes remind you of something that would appear in a Dr. Seuss book.

So here’s a roundup of some of our favorite funky flowers...the ones that are a little weird, a little wild, and completely unforgettable.

Cockscomb

These seriously look like brains… there’s no way around it. Every time we use them, someone does a double take. They’ve got this velvety texture and come in super bold colors that make them stand out in any arrangement. If you want something people will talk about, this is it.

Anthurium

These are sleek, shiny, and just a little dramatic, in the best way. Most people think of them around Christmas, but we use them way beyond that, especially in modern or tropical designs. They almost look fake (they’re not!), and they hold up really well with a variety of different colors, which makes them even better.

Sunfill Green Sunflower

We get these from local farmers, and we’re kind of obsessed. They’re sunflowers… but all green, which throws people off in the best way. They add a really natural, textured feel without the bright yellow, so they work with almost any color palette.

King Protea

These are the show-offs of the flower world, and we’re not mad about it. They’re huge, heavy, and instantly grab your attention. The thick, sturdy stem makes them feel almost like something you’d find in the wild, and they’re perfect when you want one bloom to do a lot of the work.

Pin Cushion Protea

In the same family as the king protea...these stems have all these little pokey strands coming out that make them super textural and fun. They’re great for adding a little “what even is that?” moment to a bouquet.

Thistle

We use blue thistle all the time, especially for weddings with blue tones. That natural blue color is hard to find in flowers, which makes it really special. Just a heads up though—it’s pretty, but it will poke you if you’re not careful.

Veggie Rose

We started using these for a wedding that incorporated fresh produce, and they ended up being one of the most memorable parts. They’re perfect if you want something unexpected but still soft and romantic.

Poppy Pods

These are one of our favorite little add-ins. They’ve got a hard shell and a really cool shape that adds instant texture. We use them a lot in spring and summer, but they also dry beautifully, so they stick around longer than you’d expect and work well in structural pieces.

Hanging Amaranthus

These are all the rage for our 2026 brides. These drape down and make everything feel a little more dramatic. They’re super popular in fall designs, but honestly, we love them anytime we want movement. They’re soft, flowy, and make bouquets feel a little extra (in a good way).

Kale / Cabbage

Bigger, bolder, and a little more structured than the veggie rose. These are great in spring, especially around Easter, and they hold up really well. Plus, people never expect to see something that looks like it belongs in a garden bed inside a bouquet.

Billy Balls

These are just fun, there’s no other way to say it. Bright yellow, perfectly round, and impossible to ignore. We use them all the time because they add such a playful pop, and let’s be honest, the name alone makes people smile.

Green Trick

This one always confuses people at first. It looks like moss or something you’d find growing on a rock, but it’s actually a flower. If you love texture or all-green designs, this is a must and it also helps cover mechanics easily.

Artichoke

Yep, straight up artichokes. They’re bold, spiky, and surprisingly beautiful in arrangements. We love using them when couples want something really different or food-inspired.

Spiky Gerbera

Gerberas, but make them edgy. These have thinner, more pointed petals that give them a totally different look than the classic version. They feel a little wild and less “perfect,” which we love.

Allium

These look like little fireworks or floating spheres. They add height and shape without feeling heavy, and they’re great for making arrangements feel a bit more modern and airy.

Parrot Tulips

These are tulips with personality. The petals are ruffled, twisted, and sometimes streaked with multiple colors. They feel a little chaotic in the best way and are perfect for spring designs that don’t feel too traditional.

Scabiosa Pods

These might be one of the most “what is that?” items we carry. They’ve got an almost alien look to them, and they’re amazing for adding texture. We use them a lot in more earthy or dried-style designs.

Calla Lily

Another requested 2026 and 2027 flower. Simple, but never boring. Their smooth, curved shape makes them feel really modern and clean. They’re perfect when you want something minimal but still striking.

Chocolate Queen Anne’s Lace

These are light, airy, and a little wild. Chocolate Queen Anne’s lace brings in a moodier tone. Together, they give arrangements that effortless, just-picked-from-a-field vibe.

Lotus Pods

These are definitely one of the most unique things we use. The seed heads have this bold, sculptural look that people either love immediately or can’t stop staring at. Either way, they make a statement.
