How to choose the flowers for your wedding?
During initial consultations at Bell's Flowers, we find that brides fall into two camps - those who have a detailed list of desired flowers, and those who are completely unsure. While we recommend focusing on a color scheme rather than specific flower types, it's important to have some key blooms in mind. This can help set the overall tone and aesthetic for the wedding day, and help with the selection of complementary decor. To assist our brides, we've compiled some of our favorite flowers by season that work beautifully for weddings!
Spring
Ranunculus
Ranunculus is a beloved flower, with its high petal count and vibrant + pastel range of colors creating a luxurious, yet natural appearance. Its abundant blooms make it a fan favorite among those who love the garden vibe.
Poppies
The delicate, paper-like appearance of poppies perfectly complements the spirit of spring. Despite their fragile nature, incorporating just a few poppy stems into a design can beautifully enhance any arrangement.
Tulips
The classic spring floral never goes out of style, coming in a wide array of shapes, styles, and colors. Our favorite variety here at Bell's Flowers is the parrot tulip!
Liliac
The plant's fragrant, branch-like stems make it a highly sought-after choice for purple bride enthusiasts during the spring season.
Sweet Pea
The delicate, fragrant blooms of sweet peas are a perfect addition to spring-themed weddings, adding a soft, romantic texture.
Lily of the Valley
Lily of the valley is a classic wedding flower, frequently featured in royal celebrations. Unfortunately, these delicate blooms are only available for a brief period each year, typically from mid-April to early May.
Summer
Peonies
Peonies, the beloved favorite wedding flower, are in high demand year-round, but reach their prime blooming season from late spring to early summer.
Zinnia
Vibrant and versatile, zinnias make a stunning addition to any garden or floral arrangement. These hardy flowers bloom in a diverse array of colors and sizes, making them a flexible choice for a wide range of design needs.
Cosmos
The vibrant blooms are the ideal garden-inspired flower to complete a beautiful, garden-themed wedding, complementing any floral design that dances in the wind.
Garden Rose
For brides seeking peonies, we often recommend garden roses as an alternative if we are unable to source peonies. While garden roses are available throughout the year, their peak season is during the hot summer months.
Delphinium
For brides using a blue color scheme, we often recommend blue delphinium, as there are limited blue flower varieties available. The delphinium's long, slender stems provide just the right touch of blue to complement any floral design.
Hydrangea
Hydrangeas, a classic summer flower, are a popular choice for traditional, modern-styled weddings. Available in a range of colors, the white variety remains the most sought-after. However, hydrangeas thrive in moist conditions and may struggle in hot, dry weather, making an indoor wedding venue the preferred setting for these delicate blooms.
Fall
Dahlias
Dahlias are often called the autumn alternative to peonies, as they are in high demand during the fall season and share the rich, classic look of peonies. These flowers come in a wide array of vibrant shades and sizes, which we source from local farmers - an added benefit for our customers.
Chrysanthemum
Chrysanthemums, or "mums," are a quintessential fall flower. While similar in appearance to dahlias, mums offer a more cost-effective option for budget-conscious brides planning their weddings.
Hanging Amaranthus
Hanging amaranthus, with its long, trailing stems, creates a dramatic effect that is perfect for cascading bouquets or large hanging installations.
Winter
Anemones
For brides looking to incorporate a blue color scheme, we recommend using anemones, which feature a dark navy center (despite the common misconception that it's black). While white is a classic and popular choice, anemones come in a wide range of other vivid hues, including red, hot pink, and purple.
Roses
Roses make an excellent choice for winter weddings, as they are widely available year-round and surprisingly hardy. With an extremely diverse selection to choose from, roses can withstand cold winter temperatures that would damage most other flowers.
Poinsetta
The poinsettia is one of the most popular flowers during the holiday season. Its large, vibrant blooms make it a perfect choice for any classic winter wedding. Often coming in red, white, and pink (which is our personal favorite!)
Amaryllis
The amaryllis, with its long, thick stems, is a beautiful winter flower that works well in a variety of floral designs.
